LESSON PLANS
1 - INTRODUCTION
Get familiar with your new surroundings. Many of the gauges, dials and equipment in front of you will have been a mystery until now. Before we get airborne, we will introduce you to the essential tools you will employ throughout INTERCEPTOR.
2 - TURN CONTROL
After perfecting straight and level flight on instruments alone, utilising the T Scan pattern, we introduce Rate 1 turns and how to determine them.
3 - ALTITUDE CONTROL
Now we introduce the vertical dimension and add climb and descent attitudes to your toolbox. Setting pitch and power references and holding them steady will yield the results we require.
4 - ADVANCED HANDLING
Combine turns with climbs and descents to change direction and altitude simultaneously, stretching your capacity and reinforcing a disciplined scan pattern.
5 - VOR NAVIGATION 1
The invisible aerial pathways overhead are defined by radio beacons. The cornerstone of Radio Navigation is the VHF Omni-Directional Range, or VOR. Start to become familiar with operating an OBS and find your way to and from the beacon.
6 - VOR NAVIGATION 2
Enhance your VOR navigational abilities as we set and intercept a desired Radial TO or FROM a VOR station. These allow you to approach and depart a beacon from a chosen magnetic bearing.
7 - NDB NAVIGATION
The Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) is a simple but effective navigation aid where we are presented with a bearing towards the station. It is displayed on the Relative Bearing Indicator (RBI), which you will learn to understand.
8 - NAVIGATION EXERCISE
Solidify your new knowledge in this simple beacon to beacon IFR exercise. We will navigate to both NDB and VOR stations to reinforce what we have covered so far.
9 - PARTIAL PANEL 1
No sooner than getting to grips with your instrumentation must you learn to live without them. Learn to deal with equipment failures whilst flying IFR. You can compensate for the loss of certain instruments, but must recognise the symptoms to correctly diagnose the issue.
10 - PARTIAL PANEL 2
Maintain directional control by substituting your failed Heading Indicator with the classic magnetic compass. Once you have learned of its limitations it will become an invaluable backup when the odds are stacked against you.
11 - GLASS COCKPIT
Advance to the modern era and become accustomed to current-gen tech, known as the Glass Cockpit.
12 - SID
Become familiar with your new equipment and depart Jersey, following a Standard Instrument Departure (SID). Think of SIDs as the on-ramps to the IFR highway.
13 - GNSS NAVIGATION
Use satellite based navigation to fly between waypoints. There are subtle differences in how GPS positions are displayed and selected, which we will cover in this lesson.
14 - EFFECTS OF WIND
Learn to calculate and compensate for the effects of wind drift, accounting for wind direction, wind speed and aircraft ground speed to determine a drift angle correction.
15 - HOLD ENTRY : DIRECT
When approaching a holding fix near to the inbound CRS you can perform a Direct Entry, by flying to the beacon and turning in the holding direction.
16 - HOLD ENTRY : TEARDROP
A Teardrop or Offset Entry is flown by leaving the beacon on a TRK 30 degrees from the outbound course, before turning right to intercept the inbound course to the fix.
17 - HOLD ENTRY : PARALLEL
After crossing overhead the beacon, fly parallel to the outbound course. Then perform a long left turn to align yourself with the inbound course, returning to the fix.
18 - HOLDING WITH WIND
More complex wind corrections must be applied to holding patterns as we must apply triple the drift effect to our outbound HDG in order to set us up to intercept the inbound course.
19 - HOLDING EXERCISE
A holding pattern inbound course will be selected for you at random. We discuss the entry procedure and wind corrections before flying the holding entry. Repeat the lesson for another inbound course.
20 - DME ARC
Flying a DME arc requires you to fly around a beacon at a constant distance. We will discuss the 5 Up 5 Down strategy to divide the arc into multiple small turns.
21 - VOR APPROACH
What goes up must come down. We will explore the first of our Non-Precision or 2D approaches, starting with the VOR.
22 - NDB APPROACH
Another form of 2D approach, we will this time rely upon the NDB.
23 - ILS APPROACH
A crucial piece of the IFR puzzle, the Instrument Landing System (ILS) combines both lateral and vertical guidance to provide a high accuracy approach.
24 - CIRCLING APPROACH
Initially flying the ILS, we level off and break off the approach to fly a visual circuit to touchdown on the reciprocal runway.
25 - CIRCLING WITH PRESCRIBED TRACKS
Combine multiple skills to complete a Circling with Prescribed Tracks approach into Split, Croatia. Terrain prevents a conventional instrument approach so we will perform this special procedure.
26 - MISSED APPROACH
Not all IFR approaches go to plan. If not visual as you reach approach minima, a Missed Approach must be flown.
27 - INTERCEPTION EXERCISE
Now that you are getting comfortable with the digital avionics suite, we will put this to the test with a simple VOR radial tracking exercise.
28 - ENROUTE NAVIGATION
Navigate between VORs on a clear winters night. Intercept and follow radials from three navaids, accounting for drift to stay on course.
29 - IR SKILLS TEST Part 1
Apply your new skills to embark upon a virtual IR Skills Test with your examiner. Begin the test by navigating between navaids before moving on to Part 2.
30 - IR SKILLS TEST Part 2
Complete your IR Skills Test by performing a holding pattern entry then executing a VOR approach to land.
